Ok, first of all, I've heard of Mr. Shawn Lane before but never really looked into him with being stuck on the people everyone knows (Buckethead, Satch, Vai...you know em all) but then I got the new edition of Guitar World, with the 50 Fastest Guitarist and there was a survey. Shawn Lane was the fastest gutiar player with 18 notes per second. I was like OMG basically. So I naturally looked in. Heard him do Purple Haze (always a good jam) and he destroyed it. It basically blew G3's Voodoo Chile away. I was amazed. He's a great musician and I wish he was here so we could see what he had in store with us. Hate it when the ledgends die young (Hendrix, Lane, Cobain). And may his shred live long!

I am stunned. After playing for 30 years, I suddenly come across Shawn Lane. I had read his name before but shamefully, I had never done enough diggin to learn about him. And I am genuinely sad having not done so. I've been a follower/student of the Petruccis, Parkenings, Morses, and Malmsteens of the guitar world for so long, I guess that I had blinders on. Shawn was so far beyond what other guitarists can even hope to imagine. I believe that he was a virtuosos virtuoso. Reading interviews of Shawn really provided somewhat of a window into who he was and I actually feel like I've read the words of the equivalent of Mozart or Bach or Liszt. People like Shawn are so very rare and only appear every once in a great while. He was so humble and I got the impression that he was very down to earth and friendly. I've found a new inspiration; Shawn Lane. His life, it seems, was tragic in that his medical problems were so traumatic, but I noticed that in his interviews, that was always secondary to his passion for music and the guitar. I'm fairly certain that he was the type to hide his pain and not want to burden family and friends when he was feeling his worst. It makes me wonder....his talents were beyond human ability, at least as far as the guitar was concerned. Maybe angels are among us and one's name is Shawn. With utmost respect...
